Abstract

Join our groundbreaking conference to meet with key speakers involved in working to transform the future of chronic pain management in both medical and psychological services. We are offering a multidisciplinary teaching session which brings together the latest understanding of pain science.

Chronic pain and medically unexplained symptoms are now one of the leading cause of years lost to disability and unemployment. Psychological factors including childhood adversity experiences are recognized as an important component to the development of chronic pain as a condition but have proven resistant to traditional methods.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative trauma therapy which recognises the role of traumatic stressors and brain functioning in mental health problems. A core element of EMDR is a focusing process involving dual focus/bilateral stimulation. Perhaps because of its reliance on non-verbal strategies to alter physiological responses associated with psychological problems, the method can reduce subjective levels of pain associated with disability. EMDR has also been found to achieve results more efficiently than traditional methods. The method is attracting increasing research with over six randomised controlled trials to date.

  • EMDR; A new treatment for Chronic Pain and Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS).

Headline speaker, Mark Grant joins us to educate us on his EMDR Pain Protocol including the adaptations to standard EMDR protocol for treatment of complex pain conditions alongside understanding how to integrate other healthcare strategies to holistically manage client’s with persistent pain, trauma and long term health conditions. Mark will also bring us up to date on the use of EMDR based mobile apps to treat trauma and pain based on his recent research.

  • Pain: Trauma, sleep and recovery.”   The impact of trauma on sleep, how this can contribute to the management of pain and the use of EMDR and associated techniques to aid recovery.

Dr Justin Havens, EMDR Consultant and specialist in the development of the Dream Completion Technique will be also headlining the event with his presentation to teach us about the interconnections between trauma symptomology to the sleep cycle and how pain is negatively impacted by fatigue.

  • Adverse Childhood Experiences and Pain Management – How they influence pain and what we should be doing about it…

Dr Deepak Ravindran, Consultant Pain and MSK Medicine and the Director/Founder Partner of Berkshire Pain Clinic joins us with over 20 years experience in helping people overcome chronic pain. He is one of the few consultants in the UK with dual certification in musculoskeletal medicine and pain medicine. Dr Ravindran has a specialist interest in the connections between chronic pain development and childhood adversity. He acknowledges the importance of understanding psychological background when treating pain conditions such Fibromyalgia.

  • We Are One: Why many of the answers to our chronic pain lie in our body as much as our brain.

Rodger Duckworth, The Trauma Physio who works closely with Dr Ravindran. He is a trauma informed practitioner and clinical specialist in chronic pain, stress illness and integrated body medicine. He has a particular passion working with nervous system, mind and body to resolve complex health issues.

  • The science and philosophy of chronic pain in 2024 : how we can personalise care to help people understand and overcome their chronic pain.

Richmond Stace, The Pain Coach also joins us with a wealth of over 30 years experience working in an integrative and person-centred approach to helping people suffering with chronic pain. Richmond’s focus is on helping people understand, manage and overcome their pain and gain quality of life. He utilises a pain coaching approach in practice to embrace people’s strengths and potential with a focus on what ‘can’ be done.

About The Pain Lab

The Pain Lab (TPL) provides a psychological pain management approach primarily focusing on utilisation of the EMDR Pain Protocol (created by Dr Mark Grant), which is a specialised adaptation of the standard EMDR protocol designed specifically to address chronic pain.

Our network of associate therapists are experienced trauma-informed clinicians who receive specialised training and have access to supervision by Dr Mark Grant. This ensures that each client receives specialised and standardised care. The TPL provides a case management approach which can include multidisciplinary liaison with a clients existing rehabilitation team.

This approach enhances the ability to achieve a shared goal of improved function and pain reduction. We have access to experienced pain consultants, who help guide us to providing you with recommendations on effective use of adjunctive pain management interventions when required.

The session will be recorded and available for three months following the event.
